The term service-oriented architecture (SOA) is increasingly associated with the offerings and product plans of a wide variety of HR solution vendors. But what exactly is SOA? Broadly speaking, SOA is ìan architectural approach for organizing and leveraging distributed capabilities through the loose coupling of distributed software components.î But what exactly does that mean for the HR systems domain and why should you care? This session will give participants an introduction to the basic concepts and technical foundation underlying SOA and will focus on the essential and practical steps that HR system decision makers should take to ensure their adoption of SOA-based solutions proceeds as smoothly as possible. Participants will learn:

ï What are the key concepts and terms you should know to be able to talk intelligently about SOA with solution providers?

ï What opportunities and challenges does SOA offer in the deployment of flexible enterprise HR solutions?

ï What are ìWeb servicesî and how are they related to SOA?

ï What do HR system decision makers need to ask vendors offering SOA? How might the SOA paradigm require HR-decision makers to revisit service-level agreements?

ï What is ìWeb services governanceî and why is it important?
