Job figures - TUC on manufacturing and benefit claimants
Commenting on the employment figures published today TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber, said:
The numbers of employed and unemployed people are growing, partly because there are more people of working age and partly because less of them are economically inactive, that is, out of work but not looking for work. The tragedy of manufacturing job loses is one reason why unemployment has risen. If just half the manufacturing jobs lost had been saved, then overall unemployment would not have risen at all.
Todayís figures show a huge difference between the internationally accepted measure of unemployment and the claimant count, which measures the numbers who qualify for Jobseekerís Allowance. When over a third of unemployed people do not qualify for Jobseekers allowance it is clear that this benefit is not fit for purpose, and urgently needs reform.
