Only 11 per cent of UK office workers are afraid of being fired, according to an online poll conducted by OfficeTeam, a leading provider of specialised administrative personnel on a temporary and full-time basis. Of those who worry about being fired, two per cent think about it every day and nine per cent only worry about it when they are having a bad day.
The poll also reveals that a staggering 89 per cent of those questioned (304 in total) never really worry about being fired because they feel reassured by the fact they are good at what they do and that their bosses could not cope without them.
The online poll has been inspired by the BBC 2 hit TV show ëThe Apprenticeí in which ëSir Alan (Sugar)í gets to utter the infamous words ìYouíre Firedî to a different contestant/applicant each week.
Unlike in the show where all the contestants appear to be in constant fear of being fired the survey clearly shows that in a real world this isnít the case. In fact itís the exact opposite with the vast majority of those polled being confident that they are not going to be fired.
Jo Stuteley, Regional Manager for OfficeTeam comments:
ìI think the reason the poll produced these results is due to the fact that people like to think they are good at what they do and employers in recent years have realised the benefits of both reassuring their staff of their job security and praising achievement within the workplace. This has subsequently left the UK workforce, with the possible exception of those working for Sir Alan, feeling more content and secure in their jobs.
ìIf you are however one of the few who are afraid they you may get fired there are two strategies that you should adopt: work hard to keep your job and make sure youíre prepared if the worst happens. It is advisable to follow both strategies although in some cases is a good time to evaluate if you are really happy in your current job.î
