With their credibility firmly established as one of the leading independent recruitment agencies on the south coast, Smart Recruitment recently advised local businesses on the evolution of the work place environment approaching 2016. Whilst the levels of unemployment in Dorset are the lowest in most peopleís working memory at 1.6%, this is a trend that is set to continue as the available work force reduces with employeesí retirement.
It is this circumstance that led to the Dorset 2016 seminar at which Helen Stacey spoke to the gathering of local business leaders to aid them in coping with the effects of a changing work force.
Helen comments, ìDorset is in real danger of an employee famine. The overall rise in ageing population, which is set to increase to 22% by 2016*, combined with the natural migration of some workers away from the South, could leave employers with a large gap in their work force.î
Helen is upbeat about the future of Dorsetís businesses despite these grave statistics, she says ìThere are so many ways of managing the decline in available employees in Dorset, from helping current employees increase their skill levels to employing migrant workers.î
Co-opted onto the Migrant Workers Task Force and helping to advise government, Helen has taken a pioneering role soliciting feedback from local businesses. A leading light in the field, Smart Recruitment advises the government on Migrant workers from a business perspective.
There are however many issues concerning the view of migrant workers, and this is something Helen is keen to address, ìAs part of the Government Migrant Workers Taskforce, we support finding migrant workers from outside the EU only if we cannot fill vacant positions from within the UK. In order to protect the workers we also advocate licences for suppliers in ëlow skilledí jobs such as shellfish production, food processing and horticultural businesses.î
