Tuesday 10 August
Athens 11am: Three days before the Olympic opening ceremony the ’Play Fair at the Olympics’ campaign, highlighting the exploitation of sweatshop workers making sportswear for major brands, stage a photo and broadcast opportunity. A large group of faceless activists will work at sewing machines on a rooftop in the centre of Athens, with the Acropolis as the backdrop, to draw attention to the plight of exploited faceless workers, Titania Hotel, Panepistimiou 52. Interviews with campaigners and workers will be available.
The UK ’Play Fair at the Olympics’ campaign (TUC and Oxfam) issue an update on the impact the campaign has had so far on sportswear companies and sports bodies.
Thursday 12 August
TUC calls on UK travel companies to help prevent abuse of foreign workers, on the back of a Tourism Concern report into the global holiday industry worth $500 billion a year and employing 200 million workers.
