The Pressure is on for UK Quantity Surveyors

Over two thirds of quantity surveyors in the UK have over the last few months experienced one of the busiest periods in their professional careers, according to a survey conducted by leading recruitment specialist Resourcing Solutions Limited

The survey also found that over 53% of respondents felt that this could be attributed to the sheer amount of work combined with the lack of qualified staff.

Key findings included:

- 39% stated that it was manically busy, whilst 48% felt that it had just evened out after a particularly busy period

- In turn 38% stated that it was a more hectic than they would like and that this was affecting a good work life balance

- Interestingly 63% of the sample stated that the impact of the big construction projects such as the London Olympic site had not yet hit them. Yet 56% expected that to change in the next year

- When asked why there were issues in filling permanent positions 30% believed that this was down to the poor quality of candidates, 47% felt that salaries did not match expectations and a further 12% thought that not enough people where qualifying.

Oliver Behrendt at Resourcing Solutions commented: ìIn an industry that expects highly qualified people to apply for permanent posts this makes interesting reading. The perception amongst quantity surveyors is that whilst it is busy now, it is going to get even busier over the next few years, as a number of major UK construction projects are kicked-off,î

ìWhat is critical, is the view that there are simply not enough qualified people in the market, and that those recently qualified and new to the industry simply do not have the required experience. This is going to be a difficult and expensive issue to resolve,î added Oliver. ìOn a positive note though, the evidence of our survey indicates that those in work are generally very happy, with 68% of respondents stating that the projects they are currently working on, are both career enhancing and satisfying.î
