Think accountancy, think strict regimental qualifications. Historically it has been considered necessary for candidates to have specific qualifications in order to get that all important initial foot on the career ladder in this particular sector. However, more and more people are now finding that there are alternatives when it comes to seeking employment in what was once seen as a strictly academically lead profession. Olivia Fraser, Accountancy Recruitment Consultant for Carlton Resource Solutions, looks at the options for those wishing to increase their employability in this sector.

Olivia says, ìPeople are perhaps not misinformed, but just unaware of the options out there if they wish to pursue a career in accountancy but do not have the specific qualifications. There are three specific qualifications for accountancy which many, but not all, employers look for. The CA/Chartered Accountant is gained in-house at a professional firm. Employees must adhere to a strict timetable of exams as this is seen as a highly respected qualification. The ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) and CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) offer more flexible study routes as these can be done part-time whilst working.î

Olivia continues, ìThese qualifications are seen as the cherry on the top. They can open more doors and opportunities and these qualifications are usually needed where financial sign off is required. In general employers will favour practical work experience and will see additional qualifications as a bonus. This will always depend of course on the level of the position as some positions require no need for study at all. Having the right qualifications for accounting may allow you to apply to a wider selection of vacancies although this is not always the case, large amounts of employees are QBEís (qualified by experience).î

ìHowever, QBEís are the same as Qualified Accountants in many cases and can often be more experienced. The only thing they lack is the qualification which is not required for many positions. QBEís are becoming more and more desirable and can offer a wide range of skills and if coupled with on-the-job training will reach their potential as an excellent all-round employee.î
