Over half of UK workers believe they work in an unhealthy environment and so far this year, 7.5 million people have taken a day off work due to cold or flu-like symptoms according to new research released today. It seems that many of us are resigned to being ill as 41% deem catching a cold from a colleague inevitable ñ unsurprising given that 95% of workers questioned in the Yakult survey admit to going to work whilst ill, sharing their germs along the way. However, only 20% of workers actually do anything to prevent getting sick in the first place.
Stress can be a major contributing factor to illness and this is aggravated by the number of calls we receive from the office when weíre tucked up in bed - 47% of people admitted to taking calls from the office when ill. This is perhaps because your colleagues and boss donít believe that you are actually ill (42%) and have opted for a day on the couch with your feet up, watching Richard and Judy.
12% of colleagues think a hangover is the most likely cause for absence. To reward those companies doing their bit for their staff Yakult, the original probiotic, is launching the ëYakult Healthy Workplace Awardsí. From providing fruit to yoga classes, there are initiatives in place all over the country. The ëhealthiest officeí will be rewarded with a trip to Japan for the most deserving members of their workforce.
