Employers run the risk of entering a legal minefield when new legislation designed to outlaw age discrimination in the workplace comes into force in October 2006. Recent research reveals that six out of ten (59%) individuals feel that their age has counted against them in the workplace.
To help employers prepare for the governmentís new regulations on age discrimination, the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) has launched, Law Tour on Tour, a nationwide tour of practical employment law workshops. Despite the central part that these regulations play in the new legislation, the government has not yet published them. The regulations are expected at the end of March, giving employers just six months to prepare for the new laws. These workshops will enable employers to understand the issues involved in the new age regulations quickly, suggest practical ways to ensure employers cover all areas affected by the legislation and prepare them to manage the changes.
Dianah Worman, CIPD Diversity Adviser, says, ìThe new regulations will have major implications for employers with regard to a variety of people management and development systems and processes ñ from recruitment and selection to training. However, given that the final regulations have not yet been published this leaves employers with very little time to ensure they have adapted their policies and procedures to comply with the new regulations. Many employers will find they have a lot of work to do if they are to avoid claims. This workshop should help employers to use the limited time they have to prepare wisely.î
The CIPD workshops, Law on Tour, will concentrate on the practical implications of the new age legislation. They will take place at the following locations:
Birmingham - 11 May 2006
Bristol - 12 May 2006
Edinburgh - 9 May 2006
