A nationwide poll of 1419 workers has found that over two thirds (67%) of UK employees put better pay at the top of their Christmas wish-list at work. The second most popular choice was ënew and more exciting tasksí selected by 13% of respondents. 8% wish for a better atmosphere at work, while 6% want a more capable boss. Only 6% said that they could wish for nothing more from their job.
The younger respondents were the most eager for a better salary, chosen by 72% of people in the 18 to 29 age bracket and 71% of 30-50 year olds. In contrast, only 57% of over-50ís.wanted better pay, with more from this group making less materialistic wishes than their younger colleagues.
Regionally there was little variation in responses, and the wish for better pay was shared by the majority of workers from all parts of the UK.
About the survey
The survey was carried out by YouGov on behalf of StepStone during November 2005, with respondents drawn from a cross section of demographic groups and ages and types of employment. 1,419 people were interviewed as part of an online omnibus survey.
