Exec2Exec candidates sceptical about impact of new age legislation

A recent survey of candidates from executive job board www.exec2exec.com showed that many candidates had been exposed to age discrimination

A recent survey of candidates from executive job board www.exec2exec.com showed that many candidates had been exposed to age discrimination when applying for jobs and many were also sceptical of how much the Act will actually change the opinions of recruiters and HR professionals.

îWith the imminent arrival of the Act we were keen to ascertain the experiences of our registered users,î states Matthew Cotton. ìIt appears that age discrimination remains rife within the workplace with many of our candidates having been exposed to it.î

Below are some of the comments which we received from our registered candidates.

I don’t believe the legislation will have any effect as recruiters will still come up with the standard comment of we have found a closer match to our clients requirements

I am 59 and I have applied for over 600 positions the above is a standard response, I have been told my CV is well written and impressive, my skills are extensive. Philip

I have suffered from this repeatedly! There have been dozens of jobs over the last few months that I could easily have done, but have been rejected on the basis that I am ’too senior’ or that the employer does not need someone with my experience. Inevitably, as one gets older, experience and seniority are bound to accrue. The legislation can’t come too soon!. Nigel

ìI am over 50 and have applied for many jobs requiring exactly my education, qualifications, and experience (to include even fluent German.) In all but two cases, my applications were not even considered. In several cases, the jobs were advertised many times over again and were possibly left unfilled.î Ron
