Leaders in E-learning Share their Bugbears with Kineo

Summer may be winding down, but the temperature remains high on the Kineo website this month with a new ëe-learning bugbearsí podcast, in which industry experts from Brighton to Berkeley explain what irritates them about e-learning and training.

Kineo, the leading rapid e-learning company, provides free podcasts each month to a global audience. From the beginning, Kineo has asked each expert for his or her e-learning bugbear. This month, Kineo brings those responses together, and some interesting themes emerge.

Stephen Walsh, partner with Kineo analysed the trends: ìThe industry influences who weíve spoken to want change, and itís reflected in the topics they identify as their bugbears. Several people spoke focused on responsibility. Charles Jennings, head of global learning at Reuters, thinks managers need to take more responsibility for solving performance problems, and trainers need to work better with managers and more from just training fulfilment. John Rogers, formerly of Barclays, thinks learners need to take more responsibility for shaping their careers. Clearly a shift in whoís accountable for what in terms of learning and performance is desired.î

Other e-learning bugbears? The formality of course-driven e-learning, and a desire to see organisations explore more informal, rapid responses to needs, was identified by Jane Knight. And, the use of e-learning jargon was lambasted by Kevin Kruse of ëThe e-learning guruí website.

Walsh concluded: ìThe three biggest bugbears about e-learning are as old as the term itself: it costs too, much, takes too long, and uses up too much of my valuable peopleís time. Rapid e-learning offers possibilities to improve on all three counts. Kineo will shortly announce a new set of services to help organisations secure these benefits.î
