Jeff Kennett to address workplace depression

Jeff Kennett to address workplace depression - time off work not the answer

Former Victorian Premier, The Hon Jeff Kennett, AC, will educate recruiters about the impact of depression in the workplace at a Recruitment and Consulting Services Association (RCSA) breakfast in Victoria on Thursday 10 August.

As Chairman of Beyondblue, the national depression initiative, Mr Kennett will address the recruitment industry in hope that they can help improve the way organisations manage depression and related illnesses, and raise awareness about effective management solutions with their clients.

ìDepression and related illnesses are not managed well across many organisations,î President of the RCSAís Vic/Tas region, Mr Robert Van Stokrom, said.

ìIn fact, many current management practices, such as recommending taking time off work or a holiday, may only compound the problem and make the situation worse.

ìIt is vital that workplace managers are able to recognise the signs of depression and encourage sufferers to seek assistance,î he said.

Depression costs the Australian economy $3.3 billion in lost productivity each year. Six million working days are lost with another 12 million days of reduced productivity.

Economic studies indicate that each employee with untreated depression and related conditions costs an organisation nearly $10,000 a year.

ìThe RCSA is delighted to have someone as well placed as Jeff Kennett to speak to us about the impact of depression on workplace culture and to outline the initiatives in place to alleviate the situation.

ìAs a charismatic and highly sought-after speaker, we anticipate keen interest in this breakfast,î Mr Van Stokrom said.

Bookings are essential and can be made at www.rcsa.com.au.
