Newly qualified accountants and solicitors had the rare treat of something for nothing from Birmingham based specialists Preferred Financial Recruitment at the Rep Theatre last week.
The company laid on a free workshop focussing on the art of networking, which is as Divisional Director Helen Marshall explained doesnít seem to figure in even the most sought after curriculum. ìWe see many candidates, at every level. Naturally, the more senior people are well connected, with a substantial network of contacts. Itís a completely different story for those who are newly qualified. Despite excellent professional training, there are many who could benefit from some guidance and a confidence boost when it comes to networking and personal profile building.î
Working in conjunction with BDO Stoy Hayward LLP and Pinsent Masons whose newcomers attended the event, Preferred Financial Recruitment enlisted the services of business relationship specialists Bass Clusker to deliver a practical workshop that aimed to highlight the core skills that would quickly build personal and professional profiles within the business community. Helen Marshall said ìA networking event is an opportunity to introduce people and their companies to each other and a chance to begin professional relationships that could lead not just to direct business opportunities, but to future recommendations and referrals too.î
She added ìAll too often at networking events you can see people working at extremes, either standing alone, not interacting with anyone, or dashing around the room giving out business cards as though it were a party game. And thatís not what itís about. A good networking event should see you come away with just a couple of contacts who have some genuine reciprocal interest either now or for sometime in the future.
Itís particularly important for fee earners to be out there on the business circuit, establishing themselves. We estimate that it takes around eighteen months to two years before theyíre becoming known, so thereís a lot of work for them to do and this event will give them a good start.î
The evening workshop received some very positive feedback, with one grateful attendee commenting ìAs well as the practical things that weíve gone through this evening, Iím particularly relieved to learn that itís not just me that found networking events a little bit daunting. Thatís changed and Iím looking forward to the next one, so I can go out there and shine!î
There are plans for another workshop early in the New Year, which is set to be even bigger. To express an interest in reserving a place contact info@p-f-r.co.uk
