South Downs health NHS trust receives prestigious Employer Champion Award

South Downs Health NHS Trust has been recognised by the Government for its age friendly employment practices

Brighton-based South Downs Health NHS Trust has been recognised by the Government for its age friendly employment practices.

The Trust has been awarded ìEmployer Championî status by the Age Positive campaign, a Department for Work and Pensions initiative aimed at tackling age discrimination in the workplace. The accolade is in recognition of the Trustís open-minded approach to employing staff of all ages.

Stephen Timms, Minister of State for Pensions Reform has praised the Trust. He said: ìSouth Downs Health NHS Trust is one of the most forward-thinking health organisations in the country. It now joins a growing number of employers from all sectors who are taking advantage of the benefits that come from employing staff of all ages. We are pleased to highlight the good work of the Trust in tackling ageist stereotypes, and would encourage other trusts to follow its good practice.î

The Trust has reviewed its work experience placement schemes and improved its involvement with local schools and colleges to promote the benefits of working in the health service to young people. To attract and retain older workers, the Trust has promoted a range of options to assist working beyond normal retirement age, including introducing more flexible working hours.

Employer Champions play a vital role in the Age Positive campaign by tackling age discrimination in their own workplace and highlighting the practical business benefits of having a mixed age team.

Kate Paxton at South Downs Health NHS Trust commented: ìBeing recognised as an Age Positive Employer Champion is a great honour. We recognise the need to attract people from a range of ages, skills and experiences if we are to succeed in delivering the best possible health and care for the people of Brighton. We will continue to do this in the best interest of staff and patients alike.î
