The online contest, which closed for entries on 31 January, attracted over 540 shorts based on the theme of ‘Ambition’. The top 50 films can be viewed at reed.co.uk/film.
Now in its fourth year, the reed.co.uk Short Film Competition is a major event on the UK short film circuit. Attracting a high calibre of filmmakers, entrants compete against each other for the £10,000 Grand Prix and the opportunity it brings to further their career in film. Directors have a chance of winning priceless industry exposure, as well as top cash prizes. This year’s Grand Prix winner will be awarded £10,000.
In addition to the Grand Prix, the competition also awards prizes of £1,000 for the Judges’ Commendation, and the People’s Choice Award. This year also sees the introduction of a new prize, Best Young Filmmaker, which will be chosen by the reed.co.uk team.
Along with providing a new wave of UK filmmakers with an online platform to showcase their talent, reed.co.uk will promote and screen the best 12 films at film festivals and events throughout the summer.
Mark Rhodes, Marketing Director at reed.co.uk, comments:
"We're now in our fourth year and the task of narrowing the field down to a longlist of only 50 films gets harder each time. This year's entrants have, once again, raised the bar: one look through our top 50 shows just how much undiscovered filmmaking talent is on offer.
"Our hope is that the reed.co.uk Short Film Competition continues to provide genuine career-changing opportunities for as many entrants as possible. Amongst our previous winners, some have gone on to work in advertising, one received a scholarship to a US film school and others have established their own production company.
"We'll announce a shortlist of the best 12 films in the coming weeks, but for now, let's enjoy our fifty favourites."
A shortlist of 12 films will be announced soon and the overall winner will be announced at an awards ceremony at BAFTA in May. To find out more about the reed.co.uk Short Film Competition 2013 and see which films made the top 50, visit reed.co.uk/film/longlist
