Despite a recent hike in the number of Britons claiming unemployment benefits, consultants at Elevation Recruitment claim more businesses in the region are currently looking to take on permanent employees than at any other time over the past two years.
Statistics recently released by the Office for National Statistics show that areas including Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Lincolnshire, which were largely unaffected by the summer’s Olympics, have seen a sharp increase in employment, with October showing the greatest increase in demand for permanent placements in over 23 months.
Furthermore, The Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development (CIPD)’s Labour Market Report reveals that net employment intentions increased in the last quarter to plus seven per cent, compared to plus five per cent in the three months prior.
Joint Managing Director of Elevation Recruitment, Greg Parkinson, believes that this news, coupled with the recent announcement of millions of pounds worth of funding for local businesses, is a strong indication of things to come for those looking for work in the North.
Greg Parkinson said: “Businesses operating in The City may have been able to capitalise on the short term boom provided by the Olympics, but after reaping the immediate economic benefits many have been forced to let go of workers they employed only a matter months ago, causing a sudden spike in unemployment and increasing competition for those currently out of work.
“Those in the North however were able to avoid the pitfalls of the apparent Olympic economic boom both geographically, and by adopting more conservative strategies to ensure stable growth rather than short bursts of high output, for which they needed many temporary workers, followed by an inevitable lull resulting in little need for a larger workforce.
“Coupled with the renewed business confidence brought about by recent announcement that businesses in the North will receive more financial support from the government next year, many are now in a financially stable position to expand their workforces and have approached us to discuss suitable candidates from our pool of specialist associates. The north south employment divide might well be back, but perhaps not as we know it.”
