South Yorkshire’s £65million cash injection from the Regional Growth Fund will see the county become one of the biggest employment hubs in the UK over the next five years, according to recruitment specialists Elevation.
Over 1,500 jobs are expected to be created over the next few years according to statistics by the Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership, which announced earlier this week that it would be working together with dozens of companies across the region to equip them with “robust plans for growth”.
Joint Managing Director of Elevation Recruitment Greg Parkinson said that although businesses would undoubtedly benefit from this boost, more needed to be done to ensure employers concentrated on a skills-focused approach to recruitment in order to maximize the longevity of their workforce.
Greg Parkinson said: “Although this investment represents a huge opportunity for South Yorkshire businesses to expand their workforces and recruit new staff, my concern is that employers will invest in staff which provide short term solutions to long term problems. Companies need to make concessions for the future to ensure that this investment works for them in the next ten or fifteen years by taking on staff with the right skills to carry the business forward.
