The UK’s leading graduate careers website, WikiJob, has been named the winner of the Management Today, in association with Cisco, ‘New Kid on the Block’ award, announced in the March issue of MT.
The ‘New Kid on the Block’ award is one of six awards presented as part of the MT Business Heroes awards, recognising the UK’s ‘most enterprising SMEs’. The ‘New Kid on the Block’ category rewards an entrepreneurial business which has successfully created it’s own niche in the market and, despite it’s small size, has established itself as a strong competitor.
The judge’s panel comprised a mix of successful entrepreneurs and small business experts, including Doug Richard, Michelle Dewberry, David Hathiramani, David Critchley, and Hannah Prevett.
David Critchley, Cisco UKI director of Small and Medium Enterprises, said: ‘The winners of the Business Heroes Awards are testament to the fact the UK is full of thriving and innovative SMEs of all shapes and sizes. The award praised WikiJob as a ‘career site with a difference’, commending its innovative hybrid style of job board/social network, where users ‘are encouraged to contribute, collaborate and share their experiences with their peers (albeit on a website instead of a student pub)’.
WikiJob founders, Chris Muktar and Ed Mellett, say winning the award is an encouragement not only to WikiJob, but to other SME’s and entrepreneurs.
‘When we started WikiJob, we had no experience or established business network’, says Chris. ‘We simply started the business, and worked through problems, risks and failures as they arose. To be recognised by Management Today as ‘Business Heroes’ is hugely satisfying given the amount of hard work that has gone into creating a successful business’.
