The Conference Board U.S. Leading Economic Index Increases

.

The Conference Board reports today that the Composite Index of Leading Economic Indicators increased 0.3 percent in September, following a 0.8 percent decline in August, and a 0.7 percent increase in July.

Says Ken Goldstein, Labor Economist at The Conference Board: ìThe Coincident Economic Index, which measures where the economy is at present, continued to rise in a range of 0.1-to-0.2 percent per month through September. So while the financial markets gyrated and the slump in housing intensified, the economy continued to perform at a slow but steady pace. The Leading Index has increased in two of the past four months, suggesting that this slow pace of economic activity could continue into the early months of 2008.î

The Conference Board reports that the Coincident Index increased 0.2 percent in September, following a 0.1 percent increase in August, and a 0.3 percent rise in July. The Lagging Index increased 0.5 percent in September, following a 0.3 percent increase in August, and a 0.1 percent increase in July.
