UK bosses should follow in the footsteps of business tycoon Sir Alan Sugar when trying to find the perfect ëapprenticeí.
Thatís the message from leading Cheshire head-hunter Doug Mackay who says too many companies leave recruitment to chance.
ìThe BBC Apprentice series has proved just how important the recruitment process can be,î explained Doug, a director at Collingwood Search and Selection, based in Hartford, near Northwich.
ìAll too often we find that companies panic when a job becomes vacant and make a costly mistake by trying to fill the post with whoever is available at the time.
ìHead hunters aim to shortlist a candidate within three to five weeks, but we ensure all the candidates are a good match for the business,î explained Doug.
The BBC Apprentice series gripped the nation as 14 candidates vied for a top job within Sir Alan Sugarís Amstrad empire.
Ruth ëThe Badgerí and Michelle Dewberry battled it out in a thrilling final in which Michelle landed the 100,000-a-year post.
ìAlthough a 12-week selection process was drawn out, it highlights the importance of ensuring would-be employers look at every aspect of a candidateís suitability. As well as a rigorous interview process, we use behavioural and aptitude testing that ensures the employee matches the companyís culture and the performance targets expected,î added Doug.
ìMaking a mistake when you take on a new member of staff, can cost your firm two and half times that personís salary, so more and more companies are considering the head-hunting option.î
If you are thinking of recruiting someone new, it is crucial to seek expert advice.
Generally speaking you will always find someone to do the job ñ but if you want more chance of landing the perfect employee, work with a recruitment specialist.
ìRecruitment is one of the most critical parts of a business,î said Doug.
ìPoor quality staff can make the difference between making a profit or loss in businessÖbut companies still gamble with the way they take on new people.
ìIt is important to find someone who will fit into the company culture, understand the companyís plans and the career path thatís being offered.î
