Health and social care is this monthís top performer in UK job creation
Over 40,833 jobs were created across the UKís 21 key industries in September 2007. This figure is up by 20 per cent when compared to job creation in September 2006, which is positive considering the recent financial uncertainty within the stock market created by the Northern Rock.
The JCI figures are determined by comparing the number of jobs created within UK industrial sectors each month with the number of jobs created for the corresponding month in the previous year. The JCI figure shows individual industry performance, measured as a percentage above or below the number of jobs created from a year ago. From these figures, the following trends have been highlighted:
Septemberís Front Runners
Health and social care ñ An excellent month for this sector with a positive JCI of 740
Transport and distribution storage ñ Following on from last monthís success, the transport and distribution sector is the highest in terms of percentage increase (672 per cent) in jobs created compared to September 2007
Leisure and recreation ñ A number of key hospitality chains such as JD Weatherspoons and The Restaurant Group contributed to the positive increase in job creation for this sector with a 353 per cent increase from last year
Septemberís Chasers
Industrial and engineering ñ This sector drops to the bottom of the JCI at -73
Textiles ñ Despite being in the top three last month, the textiles sector has dropped to -63 on the Job Creation Index
Ren Schuster, CEO Adecco Group, UK & Ireland, said, ìWe have seen a positive rise in job creation this month. Despite the credit crunch that is affecting city and financial jobs, a number of key sectors have shown strong efforts in job creation this month with a 20 per cent increase from the same time last year.
Investment by large retail companies in new stores around the UK has contributed to the growth in job creation for the retail and wholesaling sector. Job creation has increased by 1,023, up from 11,180 to 12,203 compared to the same period last year. It will be interesting if this positive increase continues in the run up to the Christmas spending period as companies prepare for the seasonal expected peak of spending.î
Philip Arnold, director of Mandis commented: ìThe JCI has increased overall by a surprisingly healthy 6,850, up from 33,983 to 40,833 or 20 per cent compared to the same period last year. The increase was surprising given that this year has generally been poor compared to last year and was recently hit by the transatlantic impact of the US sub-prime mortgage crisis.î
Arnold continued: ìThe brunt of the credit crunch impact has been borne by the property and the finance and banking sectors, however opportunities have also been created, for example the Newcastle Building Society that announced plans to create over 500 new jobs. The Transport, Distribution and Storage sector again registered the best performance in absolute terms with an increase in the numbers of new job creation intentions of 2,963, an increase of 672 per cent.î
The Mandis / Adecco Job Creation Index is the ongoing monthly tracker of UK jobs created across 21 industries in the UK that enables year on year monthly comparisons. This ëliveí data is gathered via research during each month into the employment intentions of a representative sample of over 2000 UK organisations, providing a key, up-to-date indicator on economic performance and confidence across the sectors. The monthly study is conducted by Mandis Business Intelligence and sponsored by Adecco, the UKís largest recruiter.
