Redundancies to take centre stage at the CIPD Law on Tour

The Spring Law on Tour workshops from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) will focus this year on helping HR directors and managers make sense of the complex legal process of making redundancies through the recession

The Spring Law on Tour workshops from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) will focus this year on helping HR directors and managers make sense of the complex legal process of making redundancies through the recession. Run by employment law specialists, the workshops will also address the legal requirements of adopting alternatives to redundancies, such as pay freezes and short-time working, which are beginning to be embraced by employers UK-wide.

Law on Tour. to start on 21 April, will enable participants to increase their knowledge of all aspects of law surrounding redundancies, such as:

Selection criteria
Age discrimination
Pregnancy and maternity
Re-structuring and re-organisation

Mike Emmott, Employee Relations Adviser at CIPD says:

ìA new trend is emerging during this recession. As our latest Labour Market Outlook Survey (LMO) shows, UK organisations are not only resorting to redundancies to control staff costs, but are increasingly turning to a range of alternatives to face these difficult times. However, the nature and the novelty of these measures, like short-time working, flexible working measures and pay freezes, mean employers need to pay the utmost attention to their legal implications.

ìThe CIPD Law on Tour Workshops are designed to help HR professionals understand the legal complexities surrounding these measures so as to avoid potential traps during their implementation.î

As well as employment law around redundancy, workshops will also deal with perennial employment headaches like poor performers, absence from work and the whole raft of employment law also due this year, such as:

The Employment Act 2008 abolishing the statutory dispute resolution procedures

New ACAS Code of Practice on Dispute and Grievance
Changes to National Minimum Wage
Statutory Annual Leave increases
