Pay, poverty and pensions - problems for young people

Seminar for young trade unionists on Thursday 20 October, 1pm - 4:30pm, TUC Congress House

The significant impact of government policies on pay, pensions and poverty among young people will be discussed at a seminar for young trade unionists on Thursday 20 October, 1pm - 4:30pm, TUC Congress House.

At the event Pensions Minister Stephen Timms MP will address the problems young people face in saving for retirement; Low Pay Commissioner Heather Wakefield will talk about the impact of the National Minimum Wage on poverty among young people; and acting Chair of the Equal Opportunities Commission Jenny Watson will set out how young women are particularly disadvantaged. Minister for Children and Families Maria Eagle MP has also been invited to speak.

The TUC will publish a report on pensions saving among young people for the seminar, which will be attended by a mix of young trade unionists, campaigners and policy officers from think tanks and youth groups will attend the seminar.
