Jonathan Nicholson has pledged to raise over 1,500 for the National Deaf Childrenís Society (NDCS) by taking part in the Flora London Marathon on Sunday 26 April 2009.

The Managing Director at an international City based recruitment firm will run the gruelling 26.2 miles (42km) to raise money to support deaf children and their families.

ìI wanted to support a charity that meant something to the family,î Jonathan says.

His son, Thomas, 3, was born with a cleft of the soft palate which caused complications with developing hearing and thus speech. The cleft was only identified when Thomas was 9 months old and was then repaired by the Cleft Unit at St. Thomasí. ìThomas continues to have some difficulties at certain ranges but a recent grommet operation has helpedî.

ìI live in Blackheath where the race starts and each year I am vowed by those inspired to do something challenging. I promise myself every year that I am going to do it, no more broken promises.î

ìThis will be my first marathon. I exercise regularly, run 2-3 times a week with the typical distance being around 10km. I eat well and take rest days seriously.î- Jonathan comments. ìI still have a lot of training to do but Iím really looking forward to the whole experience and the inspirational support of Londoners around the routeíí.

Helen Lerwill, NDCS Head of Events, explained:

ìEvery day in the UK three babies are born deaf and 90 per cent are born to hearing parents with little experience of deafness. The NDCS is the national charity dedicated to creating a world without barriers for deaf children. The NDCS is funded almost entirely through public donations. None of our work would be possible without the commitment of people like Jonathan.î
