Alan Townsend, Chief Operating Officer of Monster UK comments

Commenting on how glamorous A-Level choices impact UK employment market, Alan Townsend of Monster UK stated ìThe number of jobs in the science and engineering sectors is consistently buoyant, at Monster.co.uk we currently have over 15,000 jobs listed, and the number of science jobs in the UK is set to increase to 2.4 million by 2014. Yet we are seeing a decade-long decline in the study of science subjects at A-Level. In 1984, 54,722 students chose physics A-Level as opposed to 23,657 last year and the figures look the same for all science subjects. If students continue to dismiss the science subjects we will start to see a serious skills shortage that will lead companies to look abroad for specialist skills. The industry has its work cut out to raise awareness of the lucrative and secure jobs a career in science can lead to and students need to realise that this may be an opportunity they cannot afford to miss.î
