Valentines Day might well be a time for romance, roses and proposals but it is also a very special day for Onrec.com - the global resource for online recruitment - which will be celebrating its 9th anniversary on the same date.

February 14th 2000 saw the launch of Onrec.com and Online Recruitment Magazine. David Hurst, the founder of Onrec, recognized the considerable growth potential in using the internet to recruit and identified a need for a database of job boards along with a source of information as to what was happening in the online recruitment industry – an industry which was evolving at a phenomenal rate – so onrec.com was born.

Onrec grew quickly, initially covering only the UK, but quickly spreading to cover the US as well, and now has a global presence, hosting 3000 stories a year and supplies Google and Yahoo with the latest daily online recruitment news. According to Hurst, ìIn the beginning Onrec was purely about job boards. Today, the definition of online recruitment encompasses a much broader range of applications, tools and activities as suppliers respond to their clientsí demands to use the internet to recruit efficiently and cost-effectively. The emphasis has shifted from simply listing jobs online, much like the traditional model of classified advertising, to a far more sophisticated and multi-pronged approach not only in terms of the process of attracting candidates but also the whole process of communicating with, managing, testing and onboarding candidates.î

The key driver behind these prolific developments is the software that powers these applications. New software has made global communication possible, has enabled recruiters to track the success of their onboarding, has created the opportunity to post to multiple job boards through one application and has created sophisticated search techniques and matching technologies - to name just a few developments in recent years. Fundamentally, these technologies have greatly improved the ability to measure and track performance through different channels, so recruiters can determine where their budget is best spent and can target and communicate with candidates more effectively than ever before. A far cry from the listings services that were once a job boards raison díetre.

Looking forward to the future and Onrec – David Hurst, founder of Onrec.com and the Online Recruitment Magazine, comments: ìOnline Recruitment has only been around for 10 years or so and this is just the beginning – it is in its infancy and will develop to become an even more dominant force in the recruitment processî.
