Communications sector 'could offer jobs during recession'

The communications sector could be one of the best places for people to look for jobs as it offers hope of recovery from the current recession, it has been claimed.

Speaking at the Joint Westminster eForum & Westminster Media Forum keynote seminar: Digital Britain, Lord Stephen Carter, minister for communications, said there is growing expectation about the new digital developments in the country.

He believes that we are now living in extraordinary times and the communications sector is the one industry which is bucking the downward trend.

Lord Carter said that the communications sector is a rare ray of light in an otherwise rather gloomy economic sky.

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport and the Department for Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform, stated that in his report, Lord Carter will propose action plans for both the government and industry in developing the communications sector.

But a spokesperson from ClickAJob points out that job-seekers in communications cannot necessarily expect an easy ride.

Digital technology is advancing so fast that career professionals need to train constantly just to keep skills up to date, he says.

Then there's the surprise element, he cautions.

Science fiction has a way of becoming science fact - and just look how many technology companies were caught napping by the cell-phone revolution.

Yes, the rewards can be high - but expect long hours, lots of planning and continual frustration with technical resources if you are going to succeed, he concludes.
