CIPD today opens the door to a new membership route for experienced HR professionals

A new assessment route to membership of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) is open for business from today to reflect increasingly diverse routes into HR, greater specialisation within the profession and less linear career paths

A new assessment route to membership of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) is open for business from today to reflect increasingly diverse routes into HR, greater specialisation within the profession and less linear career paths.

The ‘Experience Assessment’ route enables HR professionals to use current and previous work experience as evidence to support entry into one of the three levels of professional membership – Associate, Chartered Member or Chartered Fellow. Candidates are expected to demonstrate appropriate workplace evidence, transferable HR knowledge, colleague feedback, as well as to carry out a detailed professional discussion in order to meet all the criteria required for one of the three levels of professional membership.

As such, the new route will enable the CIPD to better cater for people who have risen within the HR profession without starting out with a CIPD qualification, and who have not to date had their contribution fully recognised.

The Experience Assessment route is built on the CIPD’s rigorous new membership criteria and therefore draws extensively on the contents of its HR Profession Map, a tool that not only defines the knowledge, activities and behaviours that practitioners need, but also creates a clear and flexible framework for career progression.

Sue Upton, Director of Membership at the CIPD, said: “HR professionals can now demonstrate how their experience meets our membership criteria in practice. By adding a clear focus on experience and behaviours – underpinned by an appropriate level of knowledge and understanding – the new route does more than just maintain existing rigour and standards, it marks a significant raising of the bar.”

More details about the new route and how experienced professionals can access it is available from the CIPD website: www.cipd.co.uk/getnoticed
