CareerXroads Hits the Road: Job Outreach Post-Katrina

As many of us have learned there are a variety of Internet resources with dedicated job postings for victims of Hurricane Katrina. We at CareerXroads donít think thatís enough. We believe there are potentially thousands of professionals and trades people who may be holed up while trying to sort out their next step - finding a new job - somewhere, anywhere. We believe jobs for these folks may be a growing concern as recovery plans get rolling. How to get them hooked up? What resources in these areas might be tapped by employers outside? Weíre setting off to find out.



What: Job Outreach for Katrina victims - recruiting professionals will tour hurricane shelter areas to investigate the need for long-term employment among hurricane victims. Itís a week long discovery mission focused on these primary questions:

How many people are on the fringes of the impacted areas (Birmingham, etc.)?
Do they need to find long-term employment?
Are they willing to go where the work is?
Can they find and track down opportunities on their own or do they need a helping hand?

Based on the findings of this Job Outreach tour recruiters may return to the area to screen, interview and assist with other employment matters.

In addition to reaching out to meet and get information from those requiring assistance, we expect to check in with local One-Stop employment centers, meet with HR and other staffing colleagues as well as local media that may have reported on the need for jobs.
