Beyond.com, Inc., the niche career network for business professionals, surveyed visitors across its network of more than 11,000 sites to study the amount of work that is conducted by a business professional while on vacation.
Visitors were asked, ìWhen on vacation do you check in with the office?î The survey found that more than 77 percent of visitors said that they check in with the office in some capacity, whether it is by email, voicemail or both while vacationing. Of that percentage, more than 40 percent check both their voicemail and email while away, more than 16 percent check only their email, and more than 20 percent check their voicemail only, leaving 22.57 percent who said, ìNo way, Iím on vacation.î
ìThe growing use of portable devices and access to the Internet make it easy for business professionals to stay connected to the office while away, making it even more difficult to forget about work,î said Rich Milgram, CEO of Beyond.com, Inc. ìIt becomes a difficult struggle, but it is important that professionals maintain a healthy work-life balance in order to continue to be a strong contributor to the organization.î
Business professionals can maintain a healthy balance while away from the office by employing the following tips to help alleviate stress upon returning to work:
Identify a trusted colleague as a back-up person to assume some responsibilities that need to be addressed while away from the office.
Change voice mail and email greetings to clearly state an out-of-office message. Provide contact information for a back-up person to handle issues that need to be addressed immediately.
Leave contact information with a manager and at least one other person in the office in case an urgent situation arises.
Set limits when working on vacation so that work does not interfere with personal time.
