Scottish job market growing in 2007

Januaryís Bank of Scotland Labour Market Report showed that demand for staff in Scotland remained firm at the start of 2007, while wages and salaries continued to rise. The Scottish labour market is quite tight and the availability of both permanent and temporary candidates fell again in January.

The reportís labour market barometer recorded a level of 60.1, down from Decemberís four-month high of 61.5, but still well above the no-change level of 50, and indicating a healthy job markets in Scotland. The index was broadly in line with the equivalent barometer for the wider UK economy.

Demand was strongest for permanent IT and Computing staff and temporary Accounts and Financial workers.

Tim Crawford, Group Economist at Bank of Scotland, commented:

ìLatest survey data show that demand for staff in Scotland remained strong at the start of 2007. Salaries rose further in January, as firms looked to attract staff in a tight labour market. Overall, the Scottish jobs market is growing at a similar rate to the UK market, while Glasgow is the best performer at a local level.î
