Final call for equality among UK manufacturers

Manufacturing companies have until the end of the month to submit their entries to the Equality Award category of the 2006 Manufacturing Excellence Awards

Manufacturing companies have until the end of the month to submit their entries to the Equality Award category of the 2006 Manufacturing Excellence Awards (www.mx2006.org.uk).

Sponsored by the UK Resource Centre for Women in Science Engineering & Technology (UKRC), the Equality Award is one of eight categories judged by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), with support from the Warwick Manufacturing Group and Durham Business School. It assesses company policies and practices in promoting equal opportunities and diversity for all employees.

In return for entering the awards (which is free of charge) all companies are given free individually-tailored benchmarking report - worth over 10,000 - recommending ways in which to improve performance, taking into consideration each companyís size and its resources. Futhermore, all MX participating companies are entitled to a free on-site diagnostic ’health check’ visit of up to five days from the DTIís Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS) where it assesses productivity levels, providing further feedback and advice.

Those companies judged to be employing best practice will then be invited to the MX 2006 Awards Ceremony in June, where 10 category award winners are announced as well as the overall MX winner.

Alan Johnson, Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, commented:

ìThe future of manufacturing depends on the industry raising investment, applying science and innovation, best practice and skills to create even better products the world wants to buy. The MX Awards show it can be done.î
