Self-employment is an attractive option for most workers

The idea of being their own boss is attractive to the vast majority of European employees

The idea of being their own boss is attractive to the vast majority of European employees. 73% would like to work for themselves but cannot achieve this ambition because they lack the right idea or the necessary funding. Only 18% shy away from the responsibility because it is too stressful and risky, with the remaining 9% already self-employed.

These findings come from the most recent survey by online recruitment specialist StepStone, which covered more than 8,000 job seekers across eight European countries.

The Italian and French respondents emerge as the most inclined to work for themselves. In both countries 80% would become their own boss if they could, with a further 8% already self-employed.

The most risk averse are the Dutch with 25% categorically rejecting the self-employment route.

The survey was conducted through StepStoneís online career sites and covered 8,194 job seekers in Germany, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands and France. For fuller results please click here or visit our web site at:
