Eight out of ten employers predict that their business will be threatened by skills shortage

Industry recognises benefits of vocational qualifications yet slow to seize skillsí initiative

A new poll has revealed that 84% of employers think that a lack of skilled personnel will mean recruitment needs wonít be met in 2006. A further three out of four employers fear that their existing workforce may also lack sufficient skills.

The poll also revealed that most employers highlighted the clear link between training and profitability. Furthermore 9 out of 10 agree that encouraging staff to increase their skills helps to increase employee satisfaction and retention. However, despite identifying the skill shortage as a potential hindrance to UK business, the vast majority of employers have remained reluctant about tackling the problem.

Bill Rammell, Minister for Lifelong Learning and Higher Education,comments: I am pleased to see employers continue to back vocational qualifications. I want more UK business leaders to come on board and commit to the design and delivery of Foundation degrees.
