Last night the TUC release delivered a report to the government detailing instances of temps being denied training, having to pay for work clothing and receiving lower wages than permanent staff.
Currently Under UK law, temporary workers have no right to redundancy pay, to claim unfair dismissal or to take maternity leave. The Agency Workers Directive (AWD) would serve to readdress this balance by ensuring that temporary workers enjoy the same conditions as permanent staff, however the European Commission shelved the draft proposals in a bid to cut red tape.
Richard Macmillan, MD, Adecco, UK and Ireland offers the following comment on this worrying report:
At Adecco we believe that the people responsible for temporary workers should be taking responsibility for their workforceís safety and enjoyment at work. Last year we launched our own íCommitments Programmeí ensuring sound career development and benefits programmes for temporary workers. All Adecco temporary workers are on contracts of employment ensuring job security and access to many permanent worker benefits not available under the current law. As the UKís largest recruiter, it is our responsibility to encourage the rest of the recruitment industry to follow suit and to champion the importance of flexible work. Temporary working is no longer a second rate form of employment. Many workers chose temporary working as a lifestyle choice that has a huge benefits for positive impact for both employers and the UK economy.
