The online recruitment advertising service, careersintransport.com has joined forces with 5 leading training providers to submit a tender for European funding to attract hundreds of people into a career in logistics.
Should the tender be successful, the project, entitled ëGet Movingí, will commence in January 2006 and run for 2 years and engage with 500 unemployed people across the East Midlands region.
Get Moving will provide participants with the skills to work within the logistics sector as LGV drivers and certified forklift truck operatives, as well as comprehensive job search skills support and avenues to access employment within the sector.
All of this training and support will be completely free of charge to the trainees as it will be 100% funded through the European Social Fund.
Leading the project is Leigh Bailey, External Funding Officer at Stephenson College in Coalville, Leicestershire, who explains, ìThe national skills shortage in logistics has been well publicised and the situation in the East Midlands is particularly severe. î
Recent figures reported by Skills for Logistics (the Sector Skills Council for the Freight Logistics industries) show that 30% of establishments in the East Midlands have vacancies compared with 16% UK-wide. In addition, 12% of establishments regionally report skills shortage vacancies compared with 4% nationally.
Leigh adds, ìClearly employment is available but suitable candidates are not forthcoming. Get Moving will help redress this situation. With the involvement of careersintransport.com, we can not only train people, but also help them to find suitable employment very quickly ñ great news for the jobseekers AND employers!î
careersintransport.com was launched in April 2005 and has quickly proved its worth to recruiters as an effective, value-for-money method of filling job vacancies. However, the company is keen to stress that this is just one strand of their business.
Kirstie Wood, Marketing Manager explains, ìWhen we started careersintransport.com, we set out to not only bring together recruiters and jobseekers, but also to address the skills shortage. Weíre very excited about being involved in the Get Moving project. Relationships such as this very much complement our strategic aim of making a tangible and positive impact within the logistics industry.î
