Californiaís share of new information technology jobs in the United States soared in June to 29.8%, up from 26.1% the previous month. June also saw the Silicon Valley capital of San Jos reclaim the number-one spot nationally for high tech job creation. The Southern California metropolitan area of Long Beach had held the number-two and number-one spots in April and May, respectively, for new IT job creation nationwide. IT job growth remained strong in Southern California last month, however, with Long Beach holding second place and Orange County, also in Southern California, in eighth place, up from ninth in May, according to the monthly NimbleTrendsô report on national IT job trends provided by Silicon Valley firm NimbleCatTM.
After California, Texas ranked second for new IT jobs in June, its share of new high-tech positions measuring 6.3%, up slightly from Mayís 6.0%. When measured among states, Washington, DC, which had slipped from second place in April to fifth place in May, came in third in June, its share of new high-tech jobs increasing to 5.9%. The nationís capital also held third place among metropolitan areas. New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts tied for fourth place, each state creating 5.4% of Juneís new IT jobs.
The other metropolitan areas for IT and software job creation in Juneís top ten, in order of number of jobs created from highest to lowest, were Boston, MA; Chicago, IL; New York, NY; San Francisco, CA; Orange County, CA; Seattle, WA; and Dallas, TX.
The most interesting trend we see in Juneís numbers is the overall percentage of new jobs in California-while itís hardly surprising to see California at the top of the list, the increase from 23.6% to nearly 30% in only one month is noteworthy, said NimbleCat founder and CEO Sunil Mehta. If we look at our data over the past year, it may indicate a yearly a trend in California, with a substantial hiring increase in early summer. San Jose, and therefore Silicon Valley, regaining the top spot for new IT jobs among metro areas is also a big jump-moving from fourth place in May. Itís good news for Californian and especially Valley high-tech job seekers-some welcome summer relief
