Promoting Physical Activity in the Workplace Conference was launched by the BHF National Centre for Physical Activity and Health

Fit for Work! Promoting Physical Activity in the Workplace Conference was launched by the BHF National Centre for Physical Activity and Health.

The one-day event to be held at Leicester City Football Club on Thursday 20 October 2005, will provide information and practical ideas on how to create, build and maintain healthy workplaces that encourage and promote physical activity and healthy working practices.

The workplace offers a significant potential setting to promote healthy lifestyles as over half of the UK population are currently in employment and it is estimated that individuals may spend up to 60 per cent of their waking hours in their place of work.

Len Almond, Foundation Director and Senior Advisor to the National Centre said It isnít easy to find the time and effort needed to fit activity into our busy lives and car or train travel and sedentary jobs can make activity even more difficult to fit into the daily routine. Just 30 minutes of regular, moderate intensity activity accumulated over a day is enough to help to prevent serious illness such as coronary heart disease and stroke. Any activity during leisure, working or travel counts.

He continued ííReducing the time spent sitting can be the first important step in achieving the recommended healthy goal of 30 minutesí activity a day. Taking moderate physical activity during breaks, or active travel to and from work, can also make a big difference to energy levels and working efficiency.íí

The conference will link the government agenda, key aspects of social responsibility and the importance of a good work / life balance with evidence and practical examples. Information presentations on Active Travel, the National Workplace Health Pilots and how public and private sector workplaces have promoted physical activity will also provide delegates with a host of ideas and solutions for their organisations.
