Rogue trader Nick Leeson, who recently took up his first full-time job since bankrupting Britainís oldest merchant bank in 1995, arrived in Scotland this week to advise business leaders on how to prevent employment fraud.
Brought in by leading independent recruitment website ScottishJobs.com, Nick Leeson spoke to a ëstanding room onlyí audience at Glasgowís The Lighthouse about what can happen when companies fail to put in place a proper system of human resource checks and balances.
Leeson, who now lives in Ireland, recounted his role in the downfall of Barings bank and drew on how he accumulated $1.3 billion in hidden debt to highlight the importance of instituting and maintaining internal company controls and reporting systems.
Employing a mixture of humour and humility the celebrated fraudster, who recently signed on as commercial manager for Galway United Football Club, introduced himself on the night as the only person who can write a cheque and the bank bounces.
ScottishJobs.com managing director Pat Kelly says: ìScottishJobs.com is all about making the recruitment and candidate management process more effective. We saw Nick Leeson as someone who could deliver a strong message to Scottish business leaders and clients of ScottishJobs.com about what can happen when a company fails to control that process. He is an engaging and enigmatic speaker whose story holds lessons for executives at every level.î
This is the first time that the former derivatives trader, who was directly responsible for the loss of over 1,200 jobs when Barings collapsed a decade ago, has applied his experience to address potential inadequacies in the areas of recruitment and HR.
