The Importance of Change

Last October I posted on recent research that shows that the human brain is more plastic than we thought. This I thought would have implications for training.

So far so good.

But a lady called Kathy Sierra just put me on to much more. Other research on brain development shows that dull environments stops brain development. She has more details on her blog.

In summary:

Dull, lifeless work environments cause brain damage.

Or more importantly, complex surroundings create a complex brain.

The research indicates that we should not only be allowing employees to decorate their cubicle, but we should be encouraging it

Separately we should take steps to make frequent changes to the area.

If you want to keep your brain alive, you have to do things your brain doesn’t expect. She calls this blowing your own mind.

Even those who have been in a stressful environment can undo much of the damage by not just removing the stress, but actively introducing enriching and stimulating things.
This explains a lot.

Now, how should re-organise the office?
