Personality, not tech skills, is the key to a successful IT director, according to research from The Training Camp, carried out with over 1000 interviewees.![]()
Decision making and problem solving were the skills rated by over 45% of the respondents, who all report into IT directors. Only 13% of people believe that relevant experience is the most important attribute whilst technical knowledge, the most important skill for other members of the IT department, was only selected by 16% of people.
The researchís profile of a perfect candidate is a strong assertive leader who will make firm and fast choices. Verbal communications skills were all but rejected, with only 3% of respondents rating this as the most valuable quality.
ìA natural assumption is that the IT director should be the most technically experienced member of the department, but as our research proves, staff are now looking for strong guidance and leadership in director candidates,î said Robert Chapman, co-founder, The Training Camp.
ìThis is encouraging news for the IT industry. Whilst IT department staff focus on technical expertise, IT director vacancies are accessible to all comers, no matter what their background.î
