South East businesses have a heart

Research shows businesses want to do more for the South East community

Businesses in the South East of England should take their responsibility to contribute to the community very seriously. According to research released today, 86% of business leaders in the region believe local businesses should support their respective neighbourhoods and play an active part in schools and community projects.

The study from the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA), captured a snapshot of the current business climate in the South East. About half of business leaders interviewed said business prospects in the coming six months look the same, while 22% said the outlook was better, largely due to regeneration and building developments. A total of 20% of those interviewed said the forecast was bleaker - partly due to concern about the burden of regulation.

Having a skilled workforce in the town within which a company is based was deemed the most important business quality by nearly 40% of business leaders who took part in the survey.

Businesses in the area are being reminded that if they have made an outstanding contribution to the South East they can enter their company into the South East Business Awards. The awards focus on different aspects of sustainable business and will celebrate companies, which put the community at the heart of their operations. Almost two thirds of those surveyed believe winning an award helps when pitching a tender, as it gives a good indication of quality and motivates staff.

Jeff Alexander, executive director of SEEDAís Global Competitiveness Division said: ìThe South East Business Awards will showcase outstanding business achievements so far, enable leading companies to network and share best practice, and provide a benchmark for other businesses in the South East.î
