Recruitment initiative matches Trustees to Charities

People Unlimited working with Legal & General on Trusteeship Programme

Not-for-profit recruitment specialist, People Unlimited, is working with FTSE 100 financial services provider, Legal & General, to place ten senior management leaders in charity trusteeships. Board trusteeships provide vital skills, influence and guidance to a charity, drawing on their experience in the private sector and using their own network to contribute strategically and practically to the charity’s cause.

Keen to encourage their managers to use their talents to benefit society while further developing their leadership skills, Legal & General has joined forces with People Unlimited to devise a programme to match senior Legal & General managers with charities. The project shows how a private sector business can combine its corporate social responsibility and talent management strategies to benefit the public sector and the individual senior managers. The senior managers, participating out of personal choice, will be given time off their current jobs at Legal & General to attend charity board and sub-committee meetings. The charity, in turn, will be supported by People Unlimited’s Trustee Recruitment Team, providing recruitment services as well as governance and recruitment workshops, funded by Legal & General.

“This will be a long-term and far-reaching project that will impact charities, their beneficiaries and the individual trustees,” said People Unlimited Chairman, David Lale. “Legal & General is investing in the recruitment process and supporting the individual managers with the time they need to contribute positively to a charity for long-term benefit.”

The innovative programme will:

  • engage skilled senior managers from technical and commercial backgrounds with charities

  • help charities develop meaningful relationships with Legal & General, a top financial institution with a long history of commitment to the charity sector

  • provide tailor-made workshops for charities to ensure readiness to recruit and induct new trustees

“We are pleased that this exciting new scheme will allow us to provide development for some of our most talented people whilst also benefiting the third sector. We have broken away from the traditional Non Executive development route for managers in the FTSE 350 and created a scheme that benefits individuals, the sector and society as a whole” – said Graham Precey, Head of CSR, Legal & General Group Plc.

Charities that are looking for talented managers to sit on their Board of Trustees should contact Catherine Whitmore, Head of Trustee Recruitment at People Unlimited on 020 7939 7436 or email cathyw@peopleunlimited.co.uk

Participating charities will need to have the mechanisms in place to offer a trusteeship to a Legal & General employee by the end of July 2010, have sub-committee meetings at least once every quarter and be registered with the Charities Commission before the end of April 2010.
