The application of science to business leadership was the subject of a feature produced by the BBC’s technology correspondent Rory Cellan-Jones on BBC Breakfast Time on Monday 15th November.

The report featured an experiment - as yet inconclusive - being conducted by Reading University using brain scans to assess how people make business judgements.

But using technology to examine what makes a good leader is nothing new. For several decades psychometric testing has been used to help choose candidates for senior positions and try to understand what constitutes a good leader.

Professor Peter Saville is an expert in the application of psychometric assessment for over 30 years. He is Chairman of Saville Consulting based in Surrey.

In his interview with the BBC Professor Saville commented, “The history of psychometrics stretches back to techniques used by Samuel Pepys to select naval officers, and can make a valuable contribution to the process of choosing job candidates. Some interviewers judge people on the first minute of an interview. What we are doing is reducing the risk of choosing the wrong person. It's science versus sentiment.
