Payroll staff get ready for action over strike

.

With reports of planned strike action at JJB Sports on Saturday 23rd December, The Institute of Payroll Professionals (IPP), is highlighting the extra burden planned industrial action places on its members and other professionals in the industry.

When workers call a strike it is the payroll team who are hit with the added responsibility as they have to calculate employeesí salaries.

Employees who take part in any strike of this nature will not get paid for that day, but this causes problems for staff who are genuinely off sick.

Claire Warner, IPP Head of Qualifications said: When a company goes on strike, it may be very difficult to see if an individual who doesnít turn up for work was on strike or off sick. If they were off sick then they may be due Statutory Sick Pay ( SSP).

This can cause issues with the recalculation of pay, and the adjustments to pay that may need to be made after the event if the payrun has already been sent ñ a lot of additional work can be involved, the biggest issue is determining who has actually been involved in the strike or if they were off sick on that day. Pension contributions may also be affected, again adding to the administrative burden of the payroller.

If you suspect that your business may be subject to industrial action youíll need to ensure that your Payroll Team are ready to deal with the implications.
