Majority of Interviewers lack even basic interview skills

INTERVIEWERS make up their mind about a candidate within the first few minutes, but the majority lack even basic interview skills, say experts.

Getting an interview means being one step closer to a job offer but according to research, candidates often turn up completely unprepared.

Most people find the interview the most stressful part of the employment process but getting it right is vital in securing a dream job. Marketing Professionals UK have compiled a list of the most common mistakes people make in an interview:

Failure to research the company, candidates should look at company websites and brochures prior to the interview Under dressing, dress according to the company’s dress code, if unsure, always dress formally Lack of enthusiasm for the job Poor body language, this includes failure to maintain eye contact, crossing arms and a failure to smile and sit upright

Turning up late, candidates should practice getting to the venue before the big day Giving a handshake that’s either limp or too forceful Saying negative things about previous employers Not asking intelligent questions at the end of the interview, the interview should always be a two way process Leaving mobile phones on during interviews Over emphasising money. Getting the job should be a priority, salary should be discussed later

Jonny Cainer, managing director of the marketing recruitment agency said:

We interview people every day and see the same mistakes being made time and time again. Often people aren’t getting jobs because of poor interview skills, rather than being unsuitable for the position. Interviews vary vastly from job to job in terms of length and formality and preparing properly makes all the difference

The interview actually starts 100 metres from the front door - you never know who is looking out the window or parked next to you in the car park so candidates should always be on their toes Cainer added.
