Learning to train: CIPD open evening targets managers and trainers

Line managers are becoming more responsible for training their staff, with the majority of organisations (99%) using on the job training. According to research from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) line managers are responsible for over half (51%) of employee discussions concerning the success and evaluation of training.

The CIPD offers the CIPD Certificate in Training Practice to enable trainers and managers to develop the expertise to understand, identify, deliver and evaluate training within their organisation.

Martyn Sloman, CIPD Learning, Training and Development Adviser, says, ìSuccessful learning is not just about the trainer but the type of training ñ what suits one person may not suit another. Research shows there has been a shift from training to learning over recent years, which has led to the increase in on the job training.

ìTraining is one method by which you can learn ñ characterised as an instructor-led, content-based intervention, leading to desired changes in behaviour. But learning places far more emphasis on the individual and is the process by which a person gains new skills and knowledge. It is a self-directed, work-based process, leading to increased adaptive capacity.

ìThere is no single approach which can offer an effective solution to the ìdeliveryî of learning in todayís competitive environment. With over 80% of organisations believing e-learning is more effective when combined with more traditional forms of learning the message to companies is to experiment and mix traditional methods with newer online solutions.î

In response to this shift from training to learning the CIPD has also developed a new Certificate in Blended Learning. This will give training and development professionals the tools to design and develop blended learning solutions using a range of technologies to meet the needs of their staff and the business.

The CIPD is holding an open evening for prospective students of the CIPD Certificate in Training Practice and the new Certificate in Blended Learning, on Wednesday 2 November.

The open evening will allow interested individuals to talk to tutors and past students to find out how the programmes can be applied in the workplace.
