June 2005 Job creation index figures released - 65,202 positions created

Motor industry expands recruitment taking advantage of Rover skills surplus

Over 65,000 jobs were created across the UKís 21 key industries in June hitting a peak for job creation in 2005. This monthís top industries are vehicles and parts and food and drink. Major vehicles and parts companies have conducted a large-scale recruitment drive, only months after a high number of redundancies at Rover. During June 11,919 jobs were created in this sector alone, according to the market data.

The JCI figures are determined by comparing the number of jobs created within UK industrial sectors each month with the number of jobs created for the corresponding month in the previous year. The JCI figure shows individual industry performance, measured as a percentage above or below the number of jobs created from a year ago. From these figures, the following trends have been highlighted:
Juneís Front Runners

Vehicles and parts ñ The vehicles and parts industry has rolled out major recruitment drives, presumably to take advantage of the abundant labour pool. This month the sector has risen to 667 on the Job Creation Index

Food and drink ñ As Britain moves into the summer months the food and drink sector has geared up for the seasonal influx by recruiting large numbers within the industry. This month the JCI rises to 465

Leisure and recreation ñ Despite the reported slowdown on the high street, consumers are still spending on entertainment. 13,089 jobs were created this month putting the JCI at 262

Juneís Chasers
Media and marketing ñ The media and marketing sector continues to see a decline in job creation compared to last yearís figures. The JCI has dropped to -90

Printing and paper ñ The printing and paper industry had a good start to 2005 topping the job creation index for the first few months of the year but this month the JCI has dropped to -100

Richard MacMillan, managing director of Adecco UK and Ireland said: ìOverall Mandis has seen a big improvement in job creation compared with this time last year but the rise appears to be a result of specific issues that have affected different industries. The vehicles and parts sector has risen to the top of the job creation index in June which maybe down to some over recruiting by some key players in light of the Rover redundancies.î

Macmillan continues, ìSeasonal changes have also made a large impact on job creation this month with the food and drink and leisure and recreation sectors shooting to the top of the job creation index. This has been mirrored across our 350 strong branch network with a rising demand for employees in these sectors.î

Ray Murphy of Mandis commented, Despite recent anxieties about the outlook for certain parts of the economy, a review of JCI Index data for the six months January to June 2005, shows the creation of 285,912 new jobs. This represents a 16 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2004 when the total was 246.925 jobsì.

The Mandis/Adecco Job Creation Index is the ongoing monthly tracker of UK jobs created across 21 industries in the UK that enables year on year monthly comparisons. This ëliveí data is gathered via research during each month into the employment intentions of 500 leading UK organisations, providing a key, up-to-date indicator on economic performance and confidence across the sectors. The monthly study is conducted by Mandis Business Intelligence and sponsored by Adecco, the UKís largest recruiter.
