As mortar boards are thrown in the air this month, firms across the UK are looking to attract this yearís influx of graduates. But what are the most talented individuals looking for in their first job? And what can companies do to recruit and retain the best people?
A specialist coaching company that helps businesses develop a strong internal culture says that a good salary alone is a poor incentive for todayís new graduates. Managing Director of Springboard Coaching (www.springboard-coaching.co.uk) Soraya Shaw says that many businesses donít understand the things that really matter to generation Yís most creative individuals. She says:
ëThis yearís graduates are looking for a chance to make a difference through their professional life. This is causing a preference for organisations that make a positive impact through their work, such as those with an environmental remit as well as the charity sector. Strong business ethics and environmental policies have become a real asset for recruiters.
New graduates want to make their mark on the organisation they join; they want to have a voice and the chance to steer the company into the future. This is not just about career opportunities; this generation is not willing to wait to be promoted, they want to be heard now. Does your organisation listen to the people on the lowest level and can their ideas be acted on from the start?
A good salary is still important, especially because of university debt, but graduates are also looking for a working environment in which they can flourish and a company which they feel proud of. Some companies will need to make fundamental operational changes to promote loyalty amongst generation Y. If new recruits have flexibility in their role and the chance to move horizontally across an organisation they can develop different skills and find their niche without moving to a new company. Allowing people to spend time on the projects they are most passionate about and introducing charity programs can also help people feel fulfilled.í
Springboard Coaching helps businesses achieve profitable, sustainable growth and realise their vision through focusing on their ethical goals. Much of this is down to creating a strong internal culture that develops the company from the inside.
